I'm aware of the archive that is available by date, and have
occasionally retrieved things when I remembered they were discussed only
a day or two ago.  But is there a way to search the entire archive for a
word or phrase, without downloading all archives to your local drive? 
Just a listing of the subject lines in each archive would be a help,
even if the follow up messages may stray off on tangents.  That way one
could at least try to find out what people have said before about
Adorama lenses or UV filters (hey - that's a joke) before asking a
question that, in the minds of the older hands, has already been beaten
to death.

In the absence of easy access to prior messages by topic, if I criticize
somebody for asking an old question I'm really not saying much more than
that I've been reading the LUG longer than he has.  And as Marc and
others have commented, we were all newbies here once (I paraphrase, of
course Marc.)

This isn't intended as a criticism of critical comments as much as a
query about more selective access to the archive than I'm aware of.
