Haven't used one with an R8; however, I have an ancient Kalimar with an
integrated ball head that I use frequently with an M Series.

I usually place the base of the monopod a foot or two away from my body
(frontally), then lean the monopod and camera against me, with my face
being the resting place for the camera ( I'm left eyed). This arrangement
gives a semi-tripod effect, and (subjectively) permits either lower shutter
speeds or increased apature settings.
