Hello Michael,

There is no such things as a stupid question.

It is wise to register your equipment with US Customs before you leave
the country.  If you don't you should carry a copy of the original
purchase receipt.

They can check your equipment when you re-enter the US and if you do
not have either of the above they can charge you import duty on your
equipment.

As a practical mater, they will probably never check you.  But why
risk it.
