George,
I haven't seen many replies, so here is my guess. 

1)
Did you check the light source? It sounds as if it might be out of position,
either too far or too near at the condensor. 

2)
Did you check with another lens? The 50mm lens is a wide angle for a 4x5
enlarger.

Besides this, any 4x5 enlarger should print 35mm negatives without visible
vignetting.
