Regarding the Metz Flash Unit and the R8, check to see that the small 
plastic piece on front of the plastic adaptor on the Metz unit, I 
believe, is removed.  If not, the flash adaptor will not set correctly 
into the camera "shoe", and the camera will not recognize that the 
flash is present.  Flash will, of course, fire...camera will be 
"blind" as to the unit since the Metz is not making correct contact.  
Let me know if the problem is solved..
