I had the opportunity in the last few weeks of shooting
with the Summicron 35/2 Asph (latest) on an M6 and
the Summicron 40/2 an urban landscape from the
 _exact_  same position.

When scanning these full frame (2700dpi), was amazed
to see that the angle of view was identical.  Real close
examination in Photoshop showed that the image
elements were identical sizes (all at infinity) on the negs.
Think I'm saying the 40/2 is in fact a 35/2 optically!  As a
Brit, I understand that the expression is "Go figure".

If the above is too radical for you, let me just add that
the Asph had better edges until 5.6 onward but in the
centre there was not much in it from 2.8
