Chris,

The glass that Leica buys is not finished.  It either comes as blanks (they
look like glass hockey pucks) or billets which are then sawed to their rough
thickness prior to grinding and polishing and coating.  Leica grinds and
polishes the lens elements in Solms.  They also do their own coating in the
factory in Solms.  I've been there and seen it being done.
