Subject: [Leica] Erwin ? / Group Photos "Curvature" of Field ?

 I remember seeing photographers posing  large groups of people
 in a curve with the left & right sides being closer to the camera.

 Is this because what is called "curvature of field" and brings all
 the people to a more equal distance & therefore in focus.  If this
 is so,  then why is it desirable to remove this aberation from the
 more modern Leica lenses?
