Martin,

I believe you answered your own question:

"  Are they just quirky pieces of Leica history,?"

In the "olden days" the Leica had only the 50mm viewfinder so if you
changed lenses it didn't change in the viewfinder and the "viewfinder"
accessory was necessary.

And I guess there are some folks out there in LUG world who still use them
on older Leica's. I have one myself for a couple "older than me, almost"
machines.

At the moment they just look pretty. :)
