You need to wait a long time till you have USD 2000 for a
new lens. When you get a dead one, you are disapppointed
and feel betrayed by someone you "love", trust and believe
in. And, you need some time (and empathy or caressing) till
you've recovered.

Individually, a dead lens is close to a drama, and it's
emotinal impact is probably proportional to the time you
needed to put your money on a mountain. In a population
of xxx, the individual drama is almost invisible.

I'm sure, we agree.
