Absolutely,
 I'm no computer whiz (sometimes I wish I was) but I'd say it's   
impossible to define the start of computer design. A lot of   
industrialists would cite the jaquard weaving looms as being the   
precursor of early punched card systems and they were 19th century or   
some such.
 Sorry I can't think of a link back to Leicas here, except that when I   
saw one of those looms in a museum here I was carrying my camera with   
me...
 Didn't take a photo though!

What about that Chinese guy several thousands of years ago who put some
beads on some sticks and created the abacus? So it's not driven by
electrons. Neither is my M6 (to get us back on target, here). <G>
