This lens is apparently new as far as its mechanical construction and handling are concerned. Its optical formula is much of the same as the old version (a Sigma design I believe). The new version looks very much like its sibbling, the Vario-Elmar-R 35-70 f/4.0. The lens performs quite well, except full-open with a considerable drop in contrast/sharpness. As for its price: well, it is truly Leica.
