Alastair,

Don't worry about film in Kyoto.
It is easy to buy slide films here.
The price of KR(135-36EX) is about 600-800yen and 
the price of TCN400 is about 400-500yen.
(1USD=about130yen)
I'll tell you the photo-shop in Kyoto.
