Thanks, LUGGERS who answered my question about flash on hot shoe firing when
shutter depressed even though film not advanced.  The overwhelming majority
of a small sample agreed it's normal.

No one attacked the question:  If merely depressing the shutter button
(whether or not the film is advanced) fires the flash, how does the camera
know when to sync the firing within the 1/50th second the shutter is open?
