In other words, if you had your 50mm lens focused on 30ft., then the line indicating the 30ft. would have a series of lines on either side with f markings. If you for example had the lens stopped down to f8, then if you put the infinity mark at the '8' to one side of the center mark- usually right, the 10ft. would be some where near the '8' on the other side of the center line. This would indicate that everything within 10ft.-infinity would be in acceptable focus at f8. Check with a book like John Hedgcoes, and look up 'hyperfocal distance' and 'depth of field'.
