Take the bottom off the camera.

Turn it upside down if not already in that position.

See the drawing? 

Put the film in just like the drawing. (i.e. slip the film between the
three prongs just like the drawing shows - believe me it works).

Make sure the film cannister is seated all the way down.

Put the bottom back on the camera. The round thing on it pushes the film
down and seats it properly.

Wind the film, watch the rewind crank turn.

That's harder to write and slower, than actually doing it. The M6 is the
easiest to load camera I've ever used, except the Nikon F5. The R8 is
slightly more fussy.

Messing with the film just makes it more likely it won't load right. As
Nike (the slave labor company) says, "Just do it."
