Last time I checked (a few months ago) , there were two places here in 
San Diego you could buy the LS-1000 NEW for about $1300.  I just checked
my cancelled check, and sure enough, I paid under $1350 (with tax) for mine.

The two locations are:

George's Camera, San Diego, CA. 
and
Nelson Keystone, San Diego, CA.
