I've been using the HP Photosmart scanner for a few months now.  I think it
is excellent quality for the money, maybe even twice the money.  Resolution
is high, scans are fast, contrast is easily controllable.  The only
problems occur with very high contrast slides, where noise creeps into the
dark areas if you are not carefull.  I suspect that only expensive
professional oriented scanners with high colour depth and DMAX will be an
improvement for this situation.
