Erwin,

Very intersting you should mention that, as only last week a friend of mine
and myself were going through a number of books about and by photographers
from the late thirties, 40's and 50's.

There is a very distinct "lighting situation that they all followed or
used, that once it has been brought to your attention it is common
throughout very nearly all their shooting.HCB being the master. 

Our comment was, "did you notice how nearly all these guys shot on overcast
or soft light days?" They never shot on bright sunny days! Or it seems that
way on the overall.

And now what you have pointed out is true. We'll go through a number of
books from the "re-knowned shooters" just to see if it holds true in the
majority of their work.

It is a very interesting point. More so, as it being something we had
discussed only last week about lighting from those eras.
