Nick:  I'm not sure if it's under $1000 yet, prices are dropping; but with
the Nikon Coolscan II you can modify the gamma curves, set white points and
black points and view the histogram.  There are so many ways to modify the
scan that I haven't learned them all yet.  I usually just use the defaults
and adjust in PhotoShop.  Hope this helps.  Tina
