Nope, the Canon was beaten to market by a couple months.

But the A-1 had five metering modes:

Shutter Priority
Aperture Priority
Program
Manual
Stopped Down Metering

Too bad it only had an average metering pattern.  The R-3 had two 
metering patterns

The reason an R-3 should have a faster sync speed is the vertical 
shutter.  The A-1 was horizontal.  Even my F-1's only sync at 1/90 with 
the horizontal shutter and the Pentax 6x7 syncs at 1/30th with the 
horizontal shutter as well..  

But your other basic vertical shutter models like the T-90 and FM2 sync 
at 250 not to mention most all autofocus models.
