I thought > it was the other way around? Rob, You had it right: the eyes are for close-up work. Without the eyes, just use the lens and rangefinder normally. You'll notice that the focusing ring won't move to the closer distances because a tab is preventing further movement. To focus closer, you have to pull out (!) the focus ring (pull towards the front of the lens) and move it past the tab. At that point, if you don't have the eyes on, the lens still won't turn to the closer distances until you push down on the little silver ball on the eyes' platform. If you do have the eyes on, it automatically pushes down on the silver ball. In any case, you need the eyes for close focusing because the image in the rangefinder patch will not be accurate without them. - -Dave
