For compact storage, it's hard to beat little tiny cardboard boxes, and a 
stack loader (as available for Carousel projectors;  dunno about others).

Of course, for me projecting slides is far rarer than just flinging them onto 
the light table, so this doesn't seem like an inconvenience.
