I agree with your conclusion about UV filters, but the other day I was at the tide pools with my 35 Summicron ASPH and looked with horror at the salt spray on the front lens.  A gentle wipe with the Leica micro cloth fixed it (?), and then the E39 filter went on.  Peace of mind is worth something.  :-)
