He has always used Nikon too, but Leica, he told me, has a glow that no other camera manufacturer's lenses has. But he gave up Leica when the R4 was still king because of too many break downs. He didn't like rangefinders. By the way, I was told by National Geographic's former director of photography (who hired Jim) that he believed Jim was the more technically skilled photographer at National Geographic. But I have to say, most people underestimate the amazing breadth and artistic depth of his work.
