The new HP PhotoSmart scanner does 2400dpi on 35mm slides
and negatives. It does 300dpi for prints up to 5"x7". These
are true optical resolutions. I have used it, and the results
are very nice, as is the new PhotoSmart printer. Alas, the
scanner does not do any film media larger than 35mm.
