Subject: Macro Lens Question

Dear Fellow LUGnuts,

In my research and lecturing, I use macro lenses to make slides. The 90mm
to 100mm focal length seems to work best for me. In the past (up to
yesterday) I was using a 90mm f 2.5 Macro Series I lens from Vivitar on a
Canon F-1n. It was one of the sharpest lenses I have ever used for macro
work.

Does the 100mm Elmar macro produce good images for close work? I
understand the 100 Apo Elmarit is the world's gold standard. How close
does the Elmar come to the performance of the Elmarit if the lens is
stopped down one or two f stops? A used 100mm Elmar goes for about $900.
The Apo would be at least twice this is a good condition used one can be
found.

My wife may just be getting another anniversary present in the upcoming
weeks <bg>.
Thanks.

Richard
