BTW, I keep three "loupes" in the darkroom and various desk drawers, just
in case my good loupe is in another location. These lenses are the insides
from a Sawyers 3.5 inch projection lenses. You can easily push the lens
unit out of the plastic barrel, leaving a neat looking unit about 1.5" high
and 1" wide. They magnify a bit less than 4x from a comfortable viewing
distance. 

Quality is not exceptional, but they sure save a lot of time looking for
the loupe I left in the darkroom when wanting to quickly look at a slide in
the office. Other projection lenses may work, too. Since my dad worked for
Sawyer's in the 60's, spare lenses were plentiful. (I remember seeing the
PanaVue hand-held slide viewer on his drafting board back then - and they
are still in camera stores all over the world.)
