Steven, When they designed the M-series lens mount, they made the distance from the front of the mount to the film plane exactly 1mm less than it was on the screw mount cameras. This was done to make LTM accessories and lenses compatable with the M bayonet--the thickness of the adapter makes the distance identical in both systems, so focusing, etc. it exactly the same. - - Paul
