Subject: Dating equipment

Are there lists available somewhere that allow one to date equipment?  For
instance, if I see a 28mm M Elmarit listed as a "1603xxx" or a "1427xxx"
how do I know how old it is?
   Didn't Leica change their policy on releasing serial numbers, making it
more difficult to date equipment, when the company policy changed to stop
making this information available?
