Richard,

When you get a chance, try a ball head such as the minifoba or superball or 
Kaiser with the Arca-Swiss quick release and get a plate for M or R from 
Really Right Stuff.  These things plus the Carbon fiber Gitzo has changed 
my working habits.  The quick release means you'll use it more.
