You build the item as cheaply as possible (and continously look for ways to make it cheaper) and then spot check finished products to see if they are within "exceptable" limits. That's why some battery doors may be to tight and some too loose. 90% are good and the rest are plus or minus but within "exceptable" limits. I think Leica is more concerned these days (and the last 10~15 years) with the idea of their camera being "collectible" and an "investment" then something that is the absolute best in camera systems. from a former manufacturing engineer
