John -

I recently purchased a late model 50/1.4 R lens from Don Chatterton. It was
in perfect shape and quite sharp with one minor exception -- center of image
sharpness at 1.4 was slightly lower than from 2.0 on up. While most experts
will tell you this is normal, I have owned two 50's in the past 15 years
(both were 50/1.4's from Canon and Nikon) that were as sharp in the center at
1.4 as at 4.0 when viewed with an 8x loupe. The Canon vignetted far more
than the Leica R lens, however. Not sure about the Nikon.

I suspect that sharpness wide open varies somewhat from lens to lens. No two
are the same. Just depends on how fussy we choose to be. Unfortunately, I
chose to be fussier than hell and ended up returning the lens to Don. If
you're out there Don (and God, you must be after all the fuss of the past 2
months), give me one more chance in the future!
