The button you refer to is actually a cover for a a second socket that would
allow flash bulb synch.. Using your fingernails pull it straight out and
you'll see. Is the shoe on the M4 a hot shoe? if not, check to see that you
don't have a bad flash cord. Take your camera down to your local shop and
try a brand new manual flsh unit. Between these two tests you should be able
to eliminate the bad piece of gear (cord or flash). If neither is bad it's
your camera.
