The Zone System was never intended for roll film. The basis of the system is
the adjustment of development relative to assigned tonal values determined
at the time of exposure. This would work if the entire roll is of the same
subject and metered for the same values. Conceptually, you can assign a
value, zone V for instance to a mid tone and meter for that tone in the
picture, but you cannot (obviously) make the development changes for each of
your exposures. The system clearly works but cannot be applied in a strict
fashion to multi exposure/multi subject work.
