Your citing of figures from the 1930's is quite instructive, but not on
point.  Berek's concept was developed in the early 1920's, when Leitz had no
background, at all, as anything but a microscope/binocular company.  Please
keep the issue in perspective:  Leitz, by the 1930's, WAS a major player in
camera technology.  They were not so in 1922.
