The M6 manual says "If the light level is below the threshold of the
exposure meter, the LEDs will flash." I checked it out and it starts to
flash about f2 @ 1s, Which is about right for an f2 lens. So, Flashing
LEDs is a good indicator of lenscap on if you can see what you're shooting.

I have heard that there were two different designs of the M6 meter. The new
design is better and tells you when the cap is on.
