I believe Erwin Puts has already posted the answer to this question, but
at the risk of being redundant, I will restate it.

The R8 is a completely new 100% Leica-designed body. The new body style
was necessary in order to accomodate the larger, high-speed shutters
which the market demanded.

As for other *fun* R8 info, how about multi-spot (matrix) metering,
electronic mirror pre-release, flash-sync on either the 1st or 2nd
shutter curtain, and new ultra-quiet motor winder and drive. For more
info the the R8 see the new Official Leica Camera AG web site:

Regards,
Roger
