Paul, this is a not uncommon condition.  There are many technicians who
should be able to put it right.  If the rangefinder is dim, chances are
that the camera could use a good internal cleaning, lubrication and
adjustment also.  If you are not inclined to spend the $150-200 or so
needed, you'd have no trouble finding someone to relieve you of the
bother!! I for one collect M3s, and would be glad to speak with you if
you'd like to sell it.
