Leicas up to the IIIb had a lighter weight construction than did the IIIc
and later cameras. The lighter construction began to pose problems with the
development of the heavy, long-focus Telyts with the PLOOT reflex housing in
the later 1930's -- the bodies would actually bend under the additional
weight. Thus, Leica developed the die-cast body to produce a somewhat
tougher unit more resistant to bending stresses. It also helped that the
new bodies were more than a bit cheaper to construct.
