The lighter construction began to pose problems with the development of the heavy, long-focus Telyts with the PLOOT reflex housing in the later 1930's -- the bodies would actually bend under the additional weight. Thus, Leica developed the die-cast body to produce a somewhat tougher unit more resistant to bending stresses. It also helped that the new bodies were more than a bit cheaper to construct.
