It had a "letters to the editor" section that before the era of Facebook and Twitter often had 20 or 30 publishable letters each week. As instant media gradually eliminated interest in waiting a week to see your letter published, I needed to work harder and harder to get people to submit letters to us. Towards the end, I often resorted to submitting "Letters from the Editor", in which I used pseudonyms to craft realistic-looking letters and submitted them to myself. It was fun, a lot of work, and ultimately pointless. I closed the Letters to the Editor section in 2016 and I shut down the publication itself in 2019. This week I thought briefly about doing something similar with the 2021 LUG Yearbook. Every year we lose LUG members and every year there are fewer images submitted. Could I submit photographs from fake people, keeping to myself the secret that I had taken those pictures myself? No. I'm an expert writer, and I can craft a letter to the editor that no one will think was written by me. But I'm a duffer photographer, and I can't make images worthy of padding the yearbook without them looking like I took them. All of the LUG yearbooks contain only pictures taken by real people. This year there just won't be as many of them. http://leica-users.org/yearbook/submitting.html From reid at mejac.carlsbad.ca.us Sun Feb 13 20:46:57 2022 From: reid at mejac.carlsbad.ca.us (Brian Reid) Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2022 12:46:57 -0800 Subject: [Leica] IMG: pics with my new Olympus OM4T In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <7dac53977ac7d90a1cee367158a80d7d@reid.org> > > Did I mention that I love the Olympus OM film cameras? > My 96-year-old mother still uses the OM-2 I bought her for her birthday in 1976. For an attack to succeed, the victim computer must be listening to the greater internet, and receive a fraudulent transmission that it responds to. With the exception of multiplayer gaming, all home computers are behind a router that only allows inbound transmissions that are in direct response to an earlier outbound transmission. When I was a young teenager, I fooled around a lot with telephone technology. There was at that time a phone number that you could call to get a weather report. 936-1212. If you called that number, you'd get a 30-second recording about what to expect. I built a box that robotically phoned people and played the weather at them. They heard exactly what they would have heard if they had called 936-1212. Most people didn't realize that this was backwards. That you're supposed to phone the weather; the weather isn't supposed to phone you. Inbound weather reports were to be played only in response to an outbound phone call. Ignoring the issue of multiplayer video games, your home router will protect you against all external attacks. That doesn't mean you are safe, because for home computers, the criminals try to lure you into doing something that will get you in trouble. Fraudulent email, fraudulent web pages, etc. Server computers are a different story. Their job is to respond to outside requests, and so it doesn't work to protect them from outside requests. They have to be able to detect that a request is malicious and handle it appropriately. The choice of targets is complex. My servers are in a data center that also houses a number of critical resources. That means that if the criminals study routing (which they do), they can notice that the route to my servers is very similar to the route to other more valuable services. And they have extra attack capacity; why not use it and see what happens? They do not have access to traffic information unless they have insider accomplices, which usually they don't.
