While I was in there I looked at all of your other portraits. I am dazzled. You are good at this. Why six sides? If you analyze at a water molecule, two hydrogen atoms and an oxygen atom, they are connected at a 120 degree angle. If you do an image search for "water molecule" or "h2o molecule" you will see various diagrams that show this. Actual photographs of water molecules are hard to come by; their structure was determined by x-ray diffraction and not optically. When water crystallizes, the same forces that cause one molecule to be angular will cause the crystals to form with the same angularity. That's how those atoms want to connect. That 120 degree angle will give you six-sided structures. These are magnificent portraits, every last one of them. Technically masterful as well as great poses. So I started looking through his other albums. http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/Alan+Magayne-Roshak/ He has 2000 pictures overall in his LUG gallery, and I can't claim to have studied all of them. But after a while, I started noticing a pattern. The lighting in his pictures is almost always masterful. So much so that I started wondering how he did it. It couldn't just be good luck or fortunate circumstances. Well, of course, skill. The man is a truly gifted photographer, and one of his gifts seems to be an ability and interest in perfecting the lighting in his pictures. Curiosity about how he did it led me to start carefully reading the captions in his "Gear" folder and realized that he is also a truly gifted gear inventor (and obsessive collector). Besides having 9 light meters, he also shows lots of devices that he has built or modified to help make better photographs. To quote two well-known but fictitious residents of a town near Milwaukee, Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar, "We are not worthy." My various Moldovan friends hate Russia even more than many Ukrainians. The IP addresses associated with neatlabs.com's servers are in New Jersey. The registrant of a domain name is usually unrelated to the owners of the company represented by the domain. neatlabs.com is registered with GoDaddy, which often suckers people into paying extra for anonymous registrations. Neat Image is sold by Neatlabs, which does not appear to have a corporate center. It's a bunch of people who collaborate online. Everything I've seen them write suggests that English is their first language and that they keep current in US slang. Their support page claims that they answer email. https://ni.neatvideo.com/contacts/details While I was exploring this I saw a business-reference site that claimed Neatlabs has sold fewer than 1000 copies of Neat Image in total. I told her it would cost $150 to $200 to heat the pool for one day. She pointed out that is less than the meat cost for dinner that day. I remember several decades ago being told that heating Canterbury Cathedral for Christmas services cost ?500 per hour. Given the heating cost situation in the UK it is probably twice or thrice that now. Then I forgot to send reminders. Here is a reminder. Information about the yearbook is here: http://leica-users.org/yearbook/ Instructions for submitting pictures are here: http://leica-users.org/yearbook/submitting.html Here is the summary (quoted from those instructions for submitting): ------------------------------------------------- Submissions are due by email to yearbook at leica-users.org by 10 February 2023. Anyone who believes that they have taken at least 100 photographs with Leica gear (and thus understands what "Leica photography" means) can participate. You need not be a current or former member of the LUG. What to submit (short version): Tell us who you are and where you live. You wouldn't believe how much time we have spent in past years trying to figure out where photographers live, when they don't tell us. We don't like code names or #handles. If you don't tell us where you live and I can't figure it out quickly, I will write that you live in Lower Slobbovia or something like that. Or Phobos and Deimos. Attach 2 images that have enough resolution. 3000x3000 is enough. Provide captions for each. We like it when you give technical details. We encourage you to provide 100 words or so of background, local color, or explanation. In past years, not enough people have done this. We really want to know how you made the picture, where it was taken, and so on. Please don't be shy. There will be no judging or refereeing or rejection. We will print the images that you submit if they are of adequate technical quality. Look over recent yearbooks to see what technical quality can be achieved and try to make images that good. The book will be published using the Blurb print-on-demand system, so there is no requirement that you buy a copy of the book. See sections below for image preparation and submission guidelines.
