Subject: [Leica] Variable Neutral Density Filters - color tinting?

I have a Hoya variable neutral density filter that tints dramatically into 
purple. Is this typical of all variable neutral filters or is this just a 
bad implementation?

Should I just fork out the bucks for a variety of ND filters or is there a 
vendor who makes VNDs that don?t result in tinting?
