Mefistofele, by Arrigo Boito, was produced by the Houston Grand Opera in
April of 1974. It starred Norman Treigle as Mefistofele, John Alexander as
Faust and Nancy Shade as both Helen of Troy and as Margherita. Most of the
production was staged behind a contrast-muting scrim:
