Hi there ?

When Benny Goodman left the stage at the Amarillo City Auditorium in
1963, I had th audacity to follow him into his downstairs dressing room to
ask if I could photograph him while he practiced.

Goodman was as much a gentleman as he was a performer. Without
hesitation, he asked me where I wanted him to place himself in the tiny
dressing room and what I wanted him to do. He graciously obeyed.

These Goodman frames serve to remind me of a beginning photographer?s
vital lesson: As my colleague ? and retired airline pilot ? Tyler Vance
always says, ?you can?t land unless you make an approach.?

I don?t think these ever were published, but they remain in my memory
like a haunting refrain of a clarinet, heard from a long way off and a long
time ago.
