I was watching CNN in Florida, with my then 3-month old son in my lap and tears of joy in my eyes. With my background, I had of course followed the events of the fantastic summer of 1989 very closely, but with a tinge of disbelief, half-expecting to see Soviet tanks on the streets of Warsaw and Prague. But then, when the Berlin Wall fell, I knew that there would be no tanks; if the Soviet Union was prepared to allow its crown jewel (East Germany) to go, then I knew for sure that the Evil Empire was finished.
