I know how they work inside, and the storage mechanism is very delicate, sensitive to background radiation and random perturbations of the universe. I did a presentation at NYLUG about 10 years ago about preserving electronic images. I probably ought to update it to reflect current technology, but the bottom line is that if you want to keep an image in perpetuity you should print it on good paper and keep the print away from light. If you want accurate preservation of color you should print RGB separations in archival black ink. Everything electronic requires that you copy from an older medium to a newer medium every 5 years or so. Or every year in the case of SD/flash/SSD.
