"Qanats are constructed as a series of well-like <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_well> vertical shafts <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaft_mining>, connected by gently sloping <https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/sloping> tunnels <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunnel>. Qanats tap into subterranean water in a manner that efficiently delivers large quantities of water to the surface without need for pumping. The water drains by gravity <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity>, with the destination lower than the source, which is typically an upland aquifer <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquifer>. Qanats allow water to be transported over long distances in hot dry climates without loss of much of the water to evaporation <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evaporation>." We went to a water museum in Yazd that explained all about the ganats and how water use was allocated. There was a lot of interesting information and many displays but I found the ancient level used to determine the slope of the ganats to be most fascinating: http://tinamanley.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/Iran/G0000YmlbTddL96g/I0000aSa4vH2oM34 Other photos preceding.
