Ptilogonatidae is represented by only 4 species, found primarily in Central America. Sacramento County is possibly the northern end of this bird's normal range; their diet is primarily fruit and insects. This particular bird is an immature male who has found the birdbath in my yard: http://www.wildlightphoto.com/birds/ptilogonatidae/phaino03.html The adult male will not have light-colored tips on its feathers. technical stuff: R8/DMR, 280mm f/4 APO-Telyt-R, tripod & blind.
