Eliza Powel was George Washington?s greatest confidant while he was a 
general, a president, and a farmer. They carried on an epic correspondence 
which Powel burned before her death. Her gigantic house still stands in old 
city Philadelphia, with the original grandfather clock that says ?Tempus 
Fugit? across the top. Built by David Rittenhouse, Pennsylvania?s most 
accomplished clockmaker. Powel hosted all of the founding fathers and was 
widely known as a political intellectual and master debater.
